my world cup opinion

Regardless of the continued blindness by the ref's I still don't think there should be replay's. I think part of the camaraderie is commiserating with bad calls and appreciating good ones.

Oh, and the USA needs to get a grip on our immediate and 20sec interest in the newest thing - like soccer every 4 years, and only when we pass the first round.

you can't please everyone

I cut a video the other day for a company Im freelancing for. I have done hundreds of these exact videos. The FM spends minimal hours getting footage of the company. Shoots some interviews and broll. I cut it into a 1min promo and info piece for the company. In this particular instance this video is being highlighted on the company's Yelp page.

It so happened I knew one of the girls in the video. Completely randomly. We are friends and play on the same soccer team together. Its hard not to give the person you know, almost priority in the video, because you know she will want herself in it more. Almost everyone always does. There are the rarities where you get the shy person who doesn't want to be in it at all, but like I said, that's rare. Especially if she knew I edited it, she would wonder why I "cut" her out.

I would never actually "preference" anyone because I know them. I always edit for the story and what plays out and tell's it best. This FM actually did a very good job, got great footage, and great interviews. It was hard to want to cut anything out because it was all great. However that's the thing. When editing you are never actually cutting anything out. You are just putting together the best thing for the story.

So, I was able to tell a great story, including about 6 of the interviews in 60 sec, which is rare. That's a lot of content to fit in there. I thought it was a good video. Well, I saw that person the other day, and she immediately said, "They cut out my head." And without getting defensive I said, "Well there needs to be broll in the video." And this is hard for people to step back and see. Especially when they are invested, and just see their quotes or soundbites or footage - cut as she said. They don't remember seeing news stories and seeing broll over soundbites. They don't see how you need these pieces in the right place to tell the story. If we kept in her entire interview the video would have been 5 minutes long. She also said one guy was in the video twice. Well, maybe he said the best things to tell the story of the company. It just fit. It's nothing personal. And so, it's such a lesson that you can't please everyone. As good a job as you do, everyone want's to see something different.
