elephant seals really aren't that pretty

I haven't really written anything of substance in awhile. Let's try and get past that. Well, lets see. The other weekend my friend and I took a little drive south and ended up at a beach. Not sure what the name is, it was about ten min north of Santa Cruz city proper. If there even is a SC city proper. I have been to a lot of beaches between SF and SC. But when you find a beach you like you tend to stick to it, so I have never been to this beach before.

When my friend and I got in the car we just decided to drive. And go and go and go. It helped we had a gigantic bag of puffy cheese puff things between us. Yum. About five min from the beach she decides to tell me this beach is clothing optional. I really don't care, living in San Francisco one kind of has to be ok with random bursts of nudity. She also went on to explain that at one point, and maybe even still today, all of the beaches of Santa Cruz county were clothing optional.

We pulled off to the side of the road where a few other cars were parked, grabbed our 4 mostly warm PBR's and climbed up over some railroad tracks. The beach wasn't super small or super enormous, it was hidden and secluded, and had some awesome rock formations. We walked around college kids and families trying to find the perfect location, but every little spot was buzzing with bugs feeding on the sea stuff. Ya know. The black dried out seaweed type stuff. So we walked across the beach, around this little rock bend to the naked part. Hmm. Cocks, cocks, and more cocks. This really would be no issue, but being the only women at the part of the beach, and being that neither her nor I were going to be taking that much of our clothes off, we didn't really want to lay our towels in the middle of them either. So, we sat in the middle. It was great.

In between watching a naked man, with nothing but sunglasses on, play frisbee by himself, and listening to the annoying sound of girls flirting with boys, and boys chasing girls, a seal floated up on the beach. It was enormous, and ugly. Poor guy. We thought it was beached, and felt bad for it, so we called Marine Animal Control down in Santa Cruz. It turns out the guy wasn't beached at all, but it was mating season and he had lost a fight over another seal so he just came on the beach to rest. Yeah. Imagine that. And sure enough, an hour later, the guy wiggled his way back into the ocean.

It was really quite funny watching the naked men make their way over to the elephant seal, while mom's were taking photos of their kids next to it. Do you ever notice at nude beaches, its always the old men walking around all loud and proud, never any young, firm, twenty somethings. Hmm. ?

This really isn't a post of substance, but at least it's more than links to videos. It was a good Saturday.

so Obama is president. sweet.

I celebrated the inauguration of our 44th President the same place that I celebrated his election into office, Stray Bar. It was nice to ring him in officially, with a mighty fine cocktail next to friends, and a super spectacular puppy. My gosh Ingrid's dog is adorable.

I watched the official swearing in, parade, and fuss about it all on a large TV in the middle of a Wells Fargo Bank right next to the ballpark. Working at the same time. It worked.

My friend and I were just talking about how thankful we were born when we were. To see this all happen, and hopefully, try to appreciate and understand it all as well.

Im excited. Cheers-

Cherry Blossoms

I had the opportunity to go to the opening night of the Berlin and Beyond film festival, playing at the Castro Theatre yesterday. The opening film was Cherry Blossom's. This was an incredible film. Please watch it if you have the chance. Also, bring a box of kleenex.

toenails

At the moment I am sitting on my stoop, in the sun. It's 70 in January. What? And all of a sudden I hear this snap, snap, snap sound. I recognize it, but don't want to look in utter disgust. My next door neighbor is sitting on his stoop, in the middle of broad daylight, clipping his toenails. Toenails! Now, I have don't a lot of things some people might consider gross. Like leave no trace behind when camping in the middle of the woods, or followed the 10 second rule with a piece of toast I didn't have time to remake because I was running late. But this?! Oh no. This is wrong on so many levels.

It's the middle of the day. People are walking by. Everyone knows how far clipped nails have a tendency to fly. How would he like it if he was walking by someone's porch and a nail landed in his soda?

Or I guess I just appreciate this for what it is. Just another awesome quirk of The Mission.

the thing about being unemployed

You can either choose to be really productive and proactive, or really unproductive and lazy. I hope it is ok to have a combination of both. Everything in moderation right? I believe we sometimes make excuses, reasons, or rationalizations for what responsibilities we choose to ignore. For example, I just got laid off from a job I dedicated the past two years of my life to. I think Im entitled to a day in bed watching nothing but 30 Rock episodes. Or, I just ran the Boston Marathon, I think it's ok to consume the entire box of chocolate donut holes. Although Im sure anyone who actually ran the Boston marathon would congratulate themselves with a pair of Nike shoes so they could run it again.

It has only been a week, and I think I am doing a pretty good job making contacts and keeping myself busy and motivated to find the next thing. But this is where my problem lies. I don't just want the next thing. I want the thing that lights me up, that continues to challenge me, force me to learn, and that doesn't involve sitting in front of a computer 9-5.

This is the first time, I think in my entire life, that I really have nothing to do. No school, no work, nowhere to be. It is an amazing thing to have no responsibilities and no obligations. It also makes me extremely anxious. I don't want to waste this time. And it's not an infinite amount of time. There are bills, there is rent, and at some point I would like to eat, but it is sometimes challenging to be proactive about moving your life in the direction you want it to get.

It's like when I was 8 out to breakfast with my family. I always wanted just a little bit of everything, I never could just decide on one thing. My dad would never order because he would always just eat what I never finished, which was always a lot. I see so many possibilities it's hard to pick the direction at the moment.

But, I am not worried. Whatever is next, if only a step, it will be a step in the right direction. But, for now, I am going to drink my coffee in my pajamas.

Wish me luck!

wow look at the sun

The forecast calls for sunny days all through the week. No cloud in sight. It's not only supposed to be sunny but its also supposed to be in the 70's and upper 60's. With no cold wind whipping through, that makes for some pretty awesome days. It makes me want to shout.

Jackie and I walked Crissy field on Sunday. We also checked out the fort right under the bridge. I can't believe this was my first time there. It was awesome. What made is so incredible was that the entire thing was free. It was up-kept. There were no signs telling you not to go in certain places. There was no one watching over your shoulder making sure you don't do anything wrong. I am so appreciative that the city let's it be that way.

And that's it really. I saw The Reader this weekend. Jeez my gosh, I was choking on tears through practically the entire last third of the film. A pretty simple story, but really touching. The casting was awesome.
