Im Going to Korea!!!

Its been a long process, and short all at the same time. I leave somewhere in between the 19th and 22nd of this month - in a week!!!!

I have tons of stuff to do before hand, which means I need to run.

yeahhhhh!

Food Cart Deliciousness

One of these day's I will explain the whole Food Cart "movement" here in San Francisco. But for now, I will just share with you these photos from last night. A sort of First Cart Reunion.

My favorite was this $6 rice and chicken concoction. It was as if the chicken was magically held together to the bone through the broth / sauce stuff. And once it touched my lips the magic let the chicken fall. It was beautiful.

We also ran into my very good friend Daniel Lee. Small city.

This is my old [secretive] roommate (get it, because you can't see his face). He is a bad ass.

Crappy DMV

Listening to the radio this morning I found out that Beyonce Knowles made 87 Million dollars this past year. Holy mother of WOW. Good for her. Taylor Swift was 2nd and somehow Britney Spears topped the list at 3rd. How she made money this past year, I don't know, but ok. Women were the top three, dat's right! (MADE THE MOST $ UNDER 30)

Right now I'm at a coffee shop waiting for the DMV to open. It's supposed to open at 8am.The website says it opens at 8am. Well apparently Wed it opens at 9. Hmm. Classic.

More creative research - I like this site.

Spent some good R&R time in Santa Cruz last night. Visited the Diz, who is mad at work, and play, on his next PLATINUM album.

Had a great time.

design is bad ass

Design is also extremely difficult (to me). It seems hard and hyper competitive.

Here is a design found on dieline.com

creating

One christmas, I think it was, my mom got both my sister and I each a ceramic plak like thing that hangs on the wall. I don't remember what my sister's said, but mine say's "Create". So true, and so sweet of my mom. She knows me well.

Creating is all I've ever wanted to do. Without thinking about it. I can't live without creating. I know it sounds silly, and maybe a dramatic artist thing, but it's true. I also have never considered myself an artist, but I can't help wanting to make something. Something out of nothing, or out of something else. I think that's what Im really best at, is creating something out of something else. Im a good brainstormer, and somewhat a visionary, but not very good starting. Not very good at starting from scratch.

I have a friend I am so lucky to know, and even more lucky to call a friend. Nate Kendall. He creates music. For rent he sound designs and produces, but for love and to live he creates music. He is very good, very talented, and very inspiring.

It's taken me a long while to understand that I don't need to be this or that. It's not only that I don't need to be, but that it's impossible to be. I can only be me. Back to Nate... He just is what he is. He moved down to Santa Cruz this month to spend some months away and finish his album. Really start and finish it the way he needs to do it, without any distractions. He never set out to be able to work from home, be working on commercials, and be successful enough to take the time to work on his personal project. And that is what every artist, excuse me, creator wants to do. Be able to have the time and money to work on their own things. But, I don't even want to call it money, just resources - which is something I just now realized, that I have. I completely have the resources I need to do what I what to do. There is nothing holding me back but myself.

I know this seems obvious, or even a little preachy, but it's true. I just have to live it.

my world cup opinion

Regardless of the continued blindness by the ref's I still don't think there should be replay's. I think part of the camaraderie is commiserating with bad calls and appreciating good ones.

Oh, and the USA needs to get a grip on our immediate and 20sec interest in the newest thing - like soccer every 4 years, and only when we pass the first round.

you can't please everyone

I cut a video the other day for a company Im freelancing for. I have done hundreds of these exact videos. The FM spends minimal hours getting footage of the company. Shoots some interviews and broll. I cut it into a 1min promo and info piece for the company. In this particular instance this video is being highlighted on the company's Yelp page.

It so happened I knew one of the girls in the video. Completely randomly. We are friends and play on the same soccer team together. Its hard not to give the person you know, almost priority in the video, because you know she will want herself in it more. Almost everyone always does. There are the rarities where you get the shy person who doesn't want to be in it at all, but like I said, that's rare. Especially if she knew I edited it, she would wonder why I "cut" her out.

I would never actually "preference" anyone because I know them. I always edit for the story and what plays out and tell's it best. This FM actually did a very good job, got great footage, and great interviews. It was hard to want to cut anything out because it was all great. However that's the thing. When editing you are never actually cutting anything out. You are just putting together the best thing for the story.

So, I was able to tell a great story, including about 6 of the interviews in 60 sec, which is rare. That's a lot of content to fit in there. I thought it was a good video. Well, I saw that person the other day, and she immediately said, "They cut out my head." And without getting defensive I said, "Well there needs to be broll in the video." And this is hard for people to step back and see. Especially when they are invested, and just see their quotes or soundbites or footage - cut as she said. They don't remember seeing news stories and seeing broll over soundbites. They don't see how you need these pieces in the right place to tell the story. If we kept in her entire interview the video would have been 5 minutes long. She also said one guy was in the video twice. Well, maybe he said the best things to tell the story of the company. It just fit. It's nothing personal. And so, it's such a lesson that you can't please everyone. As good a job as you do, everyone want's to see something different.

wow there's a lot going on!

First and foremost our building is getting re-painted and also re-worked with pigeon netting. Woo Hoo. This means I wake up on the weekends, lying haphazardly in my bed with my laptop with men standing outside my window. They are very nice. We wave to one another. I try not to show them my naked self, and im sure they try not to look. The scaffolding is right outside my window and I am so tempted to just climb on up there and explore. Ive been on our roof enough I suppose, no need to shake up the scaffolding than necessary.

My writing has gone to shit since, well, since uhm.....? Since ive been busy trying to start my own business. Das Right! Not trying, but doing. I need to get the final pieces together and Im good to go! We'll good to go until I realize it's not working, and have to re-work, and change, and shift until it becomes something that is working. Either way, im pumped, and excited, and sooooo much cannot wait!

My very very dear good friend Ben, who is from Alaska but now lives in Boston, came and visited the west coast not too long ago. We had an incredible time. It's easy to have such an amazing time with one of the most laid back people I know. It's nice to have friends around. It reminds you where you where, who you are, and who you want to be. We spent some time in Yosemite. Eating, hiking, sleeping, being cold, being really hot, drinking, and bouldering. I didn't boulder. I watched some amazing people climb some pretty incredible things with no ropes, and sometimes no crash pads. It was sweet. We met up with my roommate and some other friends. I've said it before and Ill say it again, there are very few things better than a campfire and things cooked around and on them. Yum.

Theres more to say, but I'll let that be it for now. Yeah for a sunny sunday!

Never Give Up!

Double threat: Todd Carter kicks deep, makes smoothies
By MJD

Two things I think are underrated in life are touchbacks and fruit smoothies. Todd Carter can deliver them both.
At this time last year, Carter was working at the Tropical Smoothie Cafe, blending up Chocolate Chillers and Bahama Mamas for minimum wage. Today, he is a kicker for the Carolina Panthers, making $320,000 on a one-year deal. A pittance by NFL standards, but a mark rarely reached in the smoothie industry.

Carter just signed as a kickoff specialist for the Panthers, making him the world's most famous smoothie maker since Tron from the Mad Real World (some naughty language in that video). Veteran kicker John Kasay(notes) will still handle most kicks that have to travel through uprights, but Carter will handle kickoffs and perhaps some longer field goals.
Despite his time out of football, though, he has been working at his craft. It's not like some NFL scout wandered into the smoothie shop one day, noticed his well-sculpted calves and offered him a job as a kicker. He was a soccer goalie in high school, took on place-kicking in his senior year, and then kicked at Grand Valley State. He's also been working with former Cowboys punter Filip Filipovic(notes) in the meantime.

An opportunity came up when the Panthers incumbent kickoff guy, Rhys Lloyd(notes), signed with the Vikings. With Filipovic's help, Carter got a shot, and then got the job.

It's a tremendous story of a guy working hard and not giving up on his dream. It reminds me of Michael Lewis, the one-time Saints wide receiver who made it to the NFL after spending time driving a beer truck. If you're out there, busting your hump at a job where you bring delicious beverages to people, and you'd rather be doing something else, don't give up. It can happen for you, too.

This song was the #1 hit the day I was born. wow.

One of my roommates went to Stanford. Living in the Bay Area you end up knowing quite a lot of people who went to Stanford. If I were living in Seattle I would end up knowing a hundred people who went to UW. It's a weird thing after being from the Northwest because from my experience, although I think we have good public education options, our outlook on higher education and college is bit more... dare I say... casual? We want the best education, but it's not like we have the past four generations breathing down our throat to go to an Ivy League school, because that's what they did.

And really, that's just a lot of the west coast thinking. It's all a bit more casual. Anyway, because my roommate when to Stanford he gets the Alumni magazine every month. This thing is packed of awesome articles. They are interesting, and insightful, and even sometimes challenge their school for more answers. It seems like a nice magazine of actual journalism. My Alumni magazine I get every month is a quarter of the size, and mainly all light feature articles. Granted I know my University is probably an eighth of the size of Stanford, but still!

Crystal Bowersox is pretty talented

I don't have a tv, so I don't watch idol. I do however like to check in every now and again - mainly for the off the wall comments from the judges. Here is Crystal Bowersox singing and playing very very well.

the best video online right now

if you haven't seen it by now, you will. i thought i would just add to the hoopla-

oh snap, girl scout cookies!

Damn it. Every year I get sucked into the same thing. The overly fatty and overly delicious snacks.

My co-workers little girl was selling them, so of course that meant Dad was selling them. He put a sign up sheet in the kitchen, and that damn thing was filled so fast. A month later, and they arrived today. Thin mints and tagalongs, yum.

sunny sunday

Had a great brunch on Sunday. One of my roommates is moving out, and a different one moving in. We thought we would celebrate with a full on carb-fest sugar-tastic Brunch. Crepes, scones, German dumplings with cherries. There was a quiche and fruit salad thrown in for good measure.

It was a great start to a beautiful day. I took advantage of the sun and had a "yard" sale. I took all my unused crap from my room, laid it on the sidewalk, and somehow collected money from people who think they will have some use for it. It's incredible, people just come up and hand you a dollar for a used CD.

Not my most favorite, but definitely creative.

ok.....

so it turns out the harp woman comes in here 3 days a week and plays. she also sells cd's. good for her.

so.......

Im currently sitting in the waiting room at the hospital. 500 Parnassus st. Ive been here since 6. It's amazing when the rest of the city is sleeping, there is so much going on up in this hill here.

For instance, a woman decided she was going to lug her giant Harp from wherever she keeps it. Her attic. Her studio. Her van? She decided to lug this enormous piece of equipment/instrument/machine look alike into the hospital waiting room. The waiting room shared with lots and lots of other people waiting for their loved ones. Some stressed, some tired, some hungry, some annoyed by forms and screaming kids. This is probably one of the oddest things I have seen in a long time. I don't doubt had this instrument been a guitar, or fiddle, or keyboard people wouldn't be as nearly as forgiving. But the Harp is just so much 'out there' it's almost like you would feel bad saying anything. And honestly, the strings are kind of calming. But the whole situation is just strange.

I feel like Im at a wedding, or at church, or on the corner of some 17th century festival. ?

sorry video is upside down.

it could have been worse

We woke up early on Saturday intending to leave the house by 6am to get down and ride early. I think we might have left the city by 9, and actually got down to Monterey by 11:45. Stopping in Santa Cruz for a great breakfast from Cafe Brasil, of eggs, polenta, black beans and fruit (YUM).

Apparently I can't read google directions, or somehow typed in the wrong address, but the map got us to Monterey city hall, right next to the police station which was at the moment getting exterminated. We were looking for the campground, which according to the bakery is a mystery sight, we weren't the only ones who had gotten lost getting there either.

After almost getting back on the freeway, we stopped by the youth center and asked a very very nice woman for directions. It turned out google almost got us there. We just had to continue a little further and there it was. A pretty nice (but small) campground, over looking the city, with houses overlooking the campground. Not sure how I would feel with my house being easily accessible by transient campers. Considering I was one of those campers this particular evening I feel like it's ok for me to say that.

We picked a great campsite, #28. Not that it mattered, we weren't going to get back until dark, we were leaving before sunrise, and we were sleeping in the car - but still.

Getting directions to parks or inside or around parks are hard. It's especially hard if you are trying to find mountain bike trails. In my little experience, reading directions from mt bike books or from online, bikers don't give the best or clearest directions. Or, it could be that trails actually change all the time, so directions can be outdated if they were written more than a year ago. On that note Im not even going to try and explain how to get there. Consequently we ended up in a neighborhood seeing trails on the sides of the rolling hills, but not sure how or where to get there. After asking a cyclist with one of those aerodynamic helmets he pointed us in the right direction.

The trail was boring for the first 45min. A wider trail, all uphill. Besides the gorgeous weather and view it was annoying. Without knowing where we exactly going or having any particular goal in mind (for distance or time), we took a chance and headed off on a different trail. This was awesome and brought us to some good singletrack. I felt good. My girl kicked some major ass. I think this was only my 3rd or 4th time actually mt biking and im feeling more and more comfortable. Although, as I found out yesterday on my ride, heavy mud freaks me out.

Race day was Sunday. The race for beginners started at 9am, registration at 7:30. We got to the park which was about 20min away from our site at around 7. Chatting with the only two other people there before the fog lifted and the sun came out, we found out they were hs coaches. There were a lot of hs kids there. It was a nice opportunity to get reacquainted with over bearing and obnoxious parents. Someone I hope I never turn out to be.

The race which I originally thought was about 4 to 6 miles was actually 4-6 miles a lap, and was about 18 miles in total. Yeah, 18miles (shit). The most mountain bike riding I have done is about 10 miles. And that was casual ride. Ive cycled about 50 before, but again, pretty casual (shit). Without more of the boring details I ended up actually being in 3rd for the woman for almost the entire race. Which actually I think isn't half bad with all things considered. The last 2 or 3 miles I just lost it though, ran out of speed and endurance and ended up coming in 5th. Again, not too shabby. It was a good first race experience. Everyone was super nice, and next time when I do place I get a big shiny metal. word!

On the trail I actually ended up passing some men and junior men who actually started 1 and 2 minutes ahead of me. That felt good.

Sunday was also Valentines Day. The dumbest day on the planet.

im racing this weekend

I've recently gotten into mountain biking. Im racing in Monterey on Sunday. This is my first race ever. This is my first race ever on a borrowed bike, too big for me. Skate shoes that don't click in. No biking outfit. Should be fun - or a shit show - or both.

Ill update and let the internet world how it goes.

Im saving up for a bike of my own. I have a road bike, that is gorgeous actually and I got a really good deal on. Im selling that one (sad and any tears) to hopefully have enough cash to buy this Giant XC hardtail. Its sexy as fuck, and I can't wait to get to have it. I might sound like im 8 right now, but honestly that's how excited I am. Its a beautiful 26lb carbon frame with kick ass tires bike. hell yeah.

That sentence made no sense.

Anyway cheers to getting dirty and muddy and wet.

my moms dog is cuter than yours

and i rarely like little pups. but damn, he's adorable. his name's raider. he got lost a few months ago, and after almost 32 hours outside in the cold, a mile away, he somehow found himself back at my mom's back porch, scratching the door.

i love him.

super bowl ad's and other none sense

Yesterday was my birthday - yeah!!! It couldn't have been more perfect. Now I am over the mid 20's threshold and I guess there is officially no looking back. It was really just a great weekend in general. Saturday - biking, and friends, and drinks, and a late night drive to one of the coolest campgrounds ive ever seen. Sunday - superbowl, the fam, eating a very delicious homemade confetti cake with gobs of sprinkle frosting (dats right!).

Costanoa is a dream. Its right on the ocean, its miles away from any big cities, so the sky is a blanket of stars. There are a few accommodation options, one of which are canvas tents. They include heated beds which are in essence - heaven. There bathrooms are clean and heated. The grounds are calm and clean. There a tons of hikes, games, a giant checkers set, and two cats which seem to rule the place. One of them is matted and messy and the other is clean and soft and for some reason wanted to cuddle up on me. Im not a big cat person but this one was adorable. Isn't that the way it goes though. You, we, me, I will always favor something that likes you back. ? nature maybe?

Ok, the Superbowl. I don't want to stay on this subject for long but I feel it necessary to mention that I felt the ad's were a bit chauvinistic. I think they were less women bashing and more attempting to build up men's ego's. This isn't really a topic I feel strongly about or get overly emotional or opinionated about, however I feel like there were definitely an overly amount of these ad's promoting a variety of products - there was a theme. Im not the only one who picked up on this. My mom commented on it, and so did a few bloggers and journalists. TIME

and a quote regarding the Dove ad : It seemed that in order to accept these ads men had to internalize a lot of unpalatable messages about themselves: "I am a possibly closeted homophobe. I am a spineless weenie who loathes his wife and can't stand up to her. Beer is so important to me that I would skip an event I'd enjoy (Superbowl watching) for an event that bores me (book club) because of my hardened alcoholism."

Anyways... enough seriousness. Life is grand. I couldn't be more thankful for how blessed I am.

who doesn't love some backwards protesting

three cheers for you guys. i especially like the donuts one.

San Francisco’s Answer to Westboro Baptist Church
by ED HUNSINGER on JANUARY 29, 2010 · COMMENTS (17)

Westboro Baptist Church showed up to protest in front of Twitter’s San Francisco office on Thursday, but found themselves severely outnumbered by a crowd of absurdist pranksters, including guest blogger EDW Lynch above.

WBC’s hate-promoting signs were answered by multiple signs of randomness, nonsensical yelling, and even a unicorn. A portable stereo blared Lady GaGa, while press and people passing by ignored the WBC signs and took pictures and videos of the more entertaining signs. I was also there and turned on the video camera while holding my sign.

Westboro had scheduled an appearance in front of the Golden Gate Theatre later that evening to protest Fiddler on the Roof. Fellow guest blogger, Burstein!, reports:

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective, Fred Phelps and his followers cancelled their appearance before Fiddler on the Roof. Apparently, they were all hated out from their big day and just had no more hate to spare. Nevertheless, even in their absence a small crowd gathered and gave rise to an elegantly dadaist protest in which accordions, random signs of love and hate, and rick rolls abounded. While many of those attending Fiddler were bemused and confused, the staff and crew apparently loved this counter-protest and the director, stage manager, and choreographer all came out to thank these ridiculous protesters.

ritual coffee on valencia st

I stopped in to get a cup of coffee at ritual this morning. No, actually not a latte for once. They changed it all up. Now you order with your barista and pay after you get your drink. so you only have one wait perdiod, not two, and no crazy handsy person takes your drink, and no impatient people. Well at least no impatient people copping a feel on your drink, or in your space. AND... you line up to the left when you walk in the door. They moved the furniture to the right.

this is kind of a touching article

love? <--- whole article

"The romance, which began three years ago, could have resulted in an engagement and maybe even marriage. Instead, it was the latest in a series of fraught relationships, all of which seemed destined to end in failure.

Mr. Bowe, a perpetual bachelor, had been in love twice before — in high school and as a graduate student — but it had been so long and this new feeling was so profound that it shook him to the core. Rather than making him happy, he said, it confused him.

“This facet of experience most people center their lives around came as this alien, funny, unanticipated shock to me,” he said last week, pounding garlic and spices with a mortar and pestle in the kitchen of his West Village studio apartment. He was certain that he was in love, he said, but felt confounded by how to deal with a relationship that “came with so many complications, and a lot of fear, and a lot of pressure.

he threw the ball?

Really, he's throwing it? With give or take :45sec left, on about the 40 yard line, wide open space, another down to go, and he threw the ball. Damn it. A run 7 yards in, which he easily could have made, a field goal later, and hello Vikings / Colts Superbowl. But no.

It wasn't just that play though. It was the fumbles and the turnover, and not enough energy in the beginning. Im bummed. ...

?

I don't understand how Arco gas can be $2.45 a gallon and the 76 station down the street is $3.15. Puzzling.

The weather's crazy out there right now. Its scary and beautiful.

mill valley

Last weekend my lady and I headed to Mill Valley. I've been here 3 years, driven up and down, back and forth and past it all but I have never actually visited mill valley. It's about 15 miles north of the city, tucked in away from the freeway, past the turn offs for all the beach towns, and guarded behind the local high school. Its a small town that would probably be considered boring, a little too quaint if it weren't for the closeness to the city, the landscape of the town, and constantly active population.

Its tucked away in the woods. Well more like tucked away surrounded by hills filled with woods. There are hikes, and parks, and the houses sink into the hillsides. There are some definite dream homes back there, that besides getting little sunlight seem perfect. The town "square" or downtown I admit is tiny, but it didn't seem to stop people on a Saturday from spending all day there.

After our hike to the German Tourist Club, finally actually getting a chance to go, we came upon this French man and his son who happen to build the coolest fort against a tree. We got to chatting and the man was nice enough to drive us back down to the town to our car. He had lived in more than 30 countries in his life, God knows how many languages he spoke, and he had the cutest kid of all time. Perfect.

hello 2010

In the past week and a half I was inside of an airport 7 different times. I went on 2 hikes. One in the snow, and one in the sun. I slept - A LOT. I finished a book and haven't started another one. I read some great articles, watched a great doc, and visited a lot. I learned some new games and got my ass handed to me in some old ones. I also drank some wonderful newly discovered beer. I watched some football, none of which was that good. And did it all in 11 days. I also got sick - blah. Hello cold, flu, sinus gunk. Welcome to the new year too.

Courtesy of an extra 5hrs of time waiting around in the SFO airport - only two planes delayed out of the entire airport, and ours was one of them, we got to relax and watch a doc we had both been meaning to see, The Cove. The film is crazy, and sad, and a little cheesy, and completely eye-opening. Everyone should see it. Whilst the time on the front end was nice, it was the time on the back-end that sucked. Thank God Denver was our final destination and not the dreaded mid-point like so many other tired travelers we saw. Coming out of the tunnel from the tarmac was like walking into the doors of the emergency waiting room. People sprawled about, in a helpless state, exhausted and worried. Not wanting to make her sister drive, my gf decided we should hop on SuperShuttle. A good idea considering it was around 2 deg F, the roads weren't the safest and it was only pushing further past midnight. So we hopped in the blue and yellow beast and before we even got on the road the driver was complaining. He didn't want to be working, he was doing someone a favor, and yadda yadda yadda. Ok, fine, I understand you don't want to work, but please don't kill me on the way to our location. Yes, location. The great thing about Super Shuttle is that it picks you up and drops you off at your door, for generally very little cost. It took it in LA once and it was like $7 a person. Apparently not on Christmas Eve in Colorado. Because of complaints that the roads are bad he was only dropping people off at hotels. It was also going to be $20 a person. I'm sorry, but HELL NO. Ill wait for the bus, Ill hop in a cab, $20 for Super Shuttle not to take yo to your location. So did we say no? Yeah, right. We got right in the middle seat of that van and held on. 20min later we got dropped off at our location, The Radison Inn (I think). We were the first ones dropped off which was nice. Right after the van pulled away along comes a van for the Radisson. You know, the free shuttle you take when you are staying in the room. Shit*.

If you have not experience BluRay yet, then good for you. If so, then you know how I feel when I say I'm not so sure about it. Its like a mixture between 3d and video and film and live stage and ahhhhhh. It's confusing as hell but there is also something totally awesome about it. It's like they took the quality of film and de perfected it. Its like they took away all the layers and glossy finish and left us with something that's more raw and real. PS I could be completely wrong, but thats the feeling it gives me. Christmas Eve night with only two options to choose from, the latest Harry Potter or James Bond Quantam of Solace, we opted for the Bond. BluRay Daniel Craigs face as rough as I imagine it being off screen. With wrinkles, and sweat, and dirt.

Breaks are about having time to do the things one wouldn't normally do, so, in the theme of the hour I would like to comment on one more movie I saw. AVATAR, cue the music! Avatar was just about the sickest thing I have seen in a long long time. And not just a movie, or story, but thing. It was just all around bad ass. I fell in love with the characters and with the world that was created. Go see it!

Ok, thats it for now. I know it has been a long long long time since a last post, and also since a last video-a-day. And now, Im back at it.

Cheers to this coming year! To my website finally getting up! To explorations and a many other wonderful things.
